I'm currently the showrunner and director of The Stephen A. Smith Show. The production workflow is closer to a full-blown ESPN television program rather than a typical podcast.
I directed, produced, co-wrote scripted sections and edited every episode, trailer and promo spot for this show. I also came up with a format where the host, Schuyler Bailar, centers each episode around a common question he is asked as part of his work as a transgender educator and activist.
Working so closely with Schuyler to get his message out was a privilege, and producing this show was an amazing experience. I learned as much about myself as I did about what it's like to be transgender in this day and age.
I created, developed, co-wrote and produced this show because I genuinely could not understand why anyone would choose to pursue fighting as a profession. I'm grateful that Megan Olivi bought into the idea and was such a pro throughout the process. Highlighting the stories of some incredible people (who happen to fight in a cage for a living) was an honor.
This show is where I cut my teeth as a podcast producer. I learned how to work with talent and clients, deliver a ton of content on a regular schedule, manage editors and production calendars, and improve on existing show ideas and formats. I also saw how genuine chemistry between hosts is essential to the success of a show.
Along with editing all video assets, I live produced this trailer with actress and TikTok/Snapchat influencer Alyssa McKay in the room. Her manager said it needs to sound “like Avengers, Marvel, POW!” which I delivered, if I do say so myself. Here she is defending me after she posted a Snapchat of me and her followers mocked my job:
